How this directory is different

Most SBA lender lists rank banks by marketing spend or membership tier. This directory ranks nothing by default — you do. Each metric a searcher actually cares about is its own sortable column: median days from approval to first disbursement (a direct speed measurement), share of loans sold into the secondary market (lower = more likely you keep the same servicer post-close), charge-off rate on seasoned loans, count of large ($1M+) acquisition loans funded in the last 3 years, and industry / geographic concentration.

How to read the columns

Need a quick reference? Click Column definitions above the table for the full glossary.

  • Loans (3yr): Funded 7(a) loans ≥ $350K approved in the trailing 3 years. Filters out the high-volume, low-ticket working-capital lenders.
  • Days to Fund: Median days from approval to first disbursement. Term loans only; revolving lines and CAPLines are excluded. Shown as "—" when sample is under 5 loans.
  • PLP %: Share of loans processed under SBA's Preferred Lenders Program — typically 2–3 weeks faster to close because SBA delegates underwriting to the lender. Lenders with at least 50% PLP volume also get a PLP badge next to their name.
  • Resell %: Share of loans where soldsecmrktind = Y. Lower means more portfolio-held — you keep the same servicing relationship after close.
  • Charge-off %: Total $ charged off divided by total $ originated, on loans approved 3–6 years ago. Shown only when seasoned-cohort volume is at least $10M.
  • States: Distinct count of states where the lender funded ≥ 1 loan in the trailing 3 years. Includes DC and US territories (PR, VI, GU), so national lenders often show 50+.
  • Big M&A: Count of trailing-3yr loans of at least $1M classified as "Change of Ownership." Direct answer to "who actually writes large acquisition checks?" — much more useful than a percentage, which can be 100% at a small lender.

About the data

Aggregated from the SBA 7(a) FOIA dataset on data.sba.gov. SBA updates the raw file quarterly; this directory refreshes annually. Lender names are canonicalized to merge variants (e.g., "Live Oak Bank" and "Live Oak Banking Company"). Only lenders with at least 10 qualifying loans are included, which cuts ~2,000 raw names down to a searcher-relevant set. Loan-level detail and non-7(a) programs (504, microloan) are out of scope for v1. Snapshot date: December 2025.
